Association “Centro Unesco de Andalucia” indicates that the Mosque of Cordoba – known as La Mezquita de Cordoba or Catedral de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora – no longer belong to the Catholic Church.

Citizens have suggested that the “sanctuary” will be converted so that it no longer belongs to the Catholic Church. The proposal has received support from the Government of Andalusia.

La Gran Mezquita de Al-Andalus has been owned by the Catholic Church since 1236.

Now, an inquest ruling regarding the Andalusian government has the right to demand that the shrine released to the public and thus becomes state property.

Centro UNESCO de Andalucía wants to temple becomes public property and should no longer be called the Cordoba Cathedral, the Catholic Church calls it.

- Centro Unesco de Andalucía has nothing to do with UNESCO. It is a civilian organization entitled to make demands, but not for UNESCO bill, said the cathedral’s Bishop Demetrio Fernandez Gonzalez.

He regrets that the compound name has led to misunderstandings and confusion. Mosque or Cathedral of Cordoba has since 1984 been on the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The mosque in Cordoba is the name that tourists feel the building that. It is no wonder, since it is built in the classic Islamic style building also belonged to Islam by the year 1236, when it was taken over by Catholics who have used it as a cathedral since then, even though it resembles a mosque.

Muslims have long tried to get even use the mosque / cathedral, but the Catholic Church has rejected several times.
